There is nothing unique or special about the name Canary Wharf. This area was built on 97 acres of the old West Indies Dock and even though this was one of the busiest dock areas in the country, its name was not good enough for the new development.

Instead, Canary Wharf came from the name of No. 32 berth of the West Wood Quay of the Import Dock. The name Canary Wharf was first applied to this dock because it dealt in trade with the Canary Islands.
