Chelsea sits on the north bank of the Thames in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, mostly in the SW3 and SW10 postcodes. It is known for the King's Road, Sloane Square, garden squares and some of London's most sought-after period houses and mansion flats.
Living in Chelsea
Daily life centres on the King's Road, which runs from Sloane Square to World's End with shops, restaurants and cafés along the way. Around it are quiet residential streets of stucco terraces, red-brick mansion blocks and mews houses.
Green space is never far away. The Chelsea Embankment follows the river, Battersea Park is across Albert or Chelsea Bridge, and the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, home of the Chelsea Pensioners, host the RHS Chelsea Flower Show every May. The Chelsea Physic Garden, founded in 1673, and the Saatchi Gallery on Duke of York Square are local landmarks.
Getting around
Sloane Square (District and Circle lines) serves the east of Chelsea, and South Kensington (District, Circle and Piccadilly lines) its northern edge. Much of the King's Road is a walk from the nearest Tube, so many residents rely on the frequent buses. Imperial Wharf on the Overground serves the SW10 end.
Cost of living in Chelsea
Chelsea is one of the most expensive places to live in London. Property prices, rents and the cost of eating out are all well above the London average. On the other hand, the Royal Borough's council tax has long been among the lower rates in London; check the council's website for the current figure for your band.

The heart of Chelsea is SW3, which covers the King's Road east of Beaufort Street, Sloane Avenue, Cheyne Walk and streets such as The Vale, Glebe Place and Draycott Place. Western Chelsea, including World's End, Chelsea Harbour and the streets towards West Brompton, is in SW10. The area around Sloane Square falls in SW1, shared with Belgravia.
House prices in Chelsea
Across the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, the average price paid for a home was about £1.20 million. Flats and maisonettes averaged about £948,000, and terraced houses about £2.39 million. Garden squares, riverside houses and the streets around Sloane Square and Cheyne Walk sit well above these averages.
