One of the greatest aspects of Fulham is its history. The name was first recorded in the 7th century as a Bishop’s summer residence. In fact, Fulham Palace was the summer home for Bishops for 900 years.
This area was also a place for Danish invaders to winter before continuing on with their warfare. Over the centuries, this area of South-west London has developed into a nice region for anyone to find a nice home.
Up until the mid-20th century, this was a working man’s and lower-class section of the city. But things change, and Fulham is catching up to Chelsea in regards to the exclusive property and wealthy residents.
Along with Fulham FC, the Queen’s club for tennis and the Hurlingham Club make their home in Fulham.
This section of London is located at a unique bend in the Thames River. This bend covers the southern and western boundaries of Fulham up to Hammersmith.
On the north boundary, Fulham is nestled next to Kennsington, with Chelsea and the river Thames on the eastern side. Across the Thames, you will find Putney, Wandsworth, and Battersea, all with bridges connecting those neighbourhoods with Fulham.
In other words, Fulham is located in the heart of London, not far from Notting Hill and Westminster. Inside this area, you will find many Victorian and Edwardian homes, but the neighbourhood is quickly catching up to the likes of its neighbour Chelsea in terms of luxury living and nice homes to live in.
This section of London is sporting some wonderful tree-lined streets that help gives Fulham a country-like feel even though it is all urban in design and surroundings.
This is a great community if you want a relaxed lifestyle while remaining close to city life and all it has to offer.
Right now, there are probably over 1000 homes and apartments for sale in Fulham. These housing opportunities cover the whole scale of classes from lower middle class to luxury style homes.
The most expensive home at this time is found at Broomhouse Lane, and its asking price is £15,000,000. The next most expensive homes are located in Rainsborough Square for £5,000,000 and £4,700,000.
There are a few of these high-class homes available, and they add a touch of wealth to the area. In fact, some listings do not go below £800,000. It is becoming a very exclusive place to live.
However, the farther west you go in Fulham, you will find affordable homes and flats. Some get as low as £200,000. This section of London is a quaint area that provides residents with plenty of shops, cafes, and parks to walk and talk with their friends.
While it is still filled with Edwardian and Victorian homes, times are changing as new housing developments are upgrading the look of the area and making it more than a working man’s area.
Even though there are affordable homes in the area, those are getting harder and harder to come by.
This little village is ever-changing, and once an affordable place to live, you will find that even rental prices are challenging Chelsea’s rental prices. A good studio is commanding over £2,000 PCM(Per Calender Month) for rent while a nice home on Sedlescombe Road is asking for almost £ 6,000 PCM.
The average rental price is going to be about £ 2000 for flats and apartments, while homes can average around £ 3000 PCM. It is certainly a landlord’s market in this section of Southwest London.
Some of these rental prices are brought down if you are only looking for a PW(Per Week) type of rental agreement. This is certainly not the Fulham of old, where affordable housing was the norm.
One of the better attractions that help draw people to this little village is Bishop’s Palace. Its architecture reflects the rebuilding of the property in Tudor times. Later renovations added a Georgian and Victorian flair to the home.
Another attraction that helps Fulham residents pass the time is cheering for the Fulham FC at Craven Cottage. The Cottage is located in Bishop’s Park, which lends itself to good family picnics.
If that is not enough, then you have many shops on Fulham Broadway. It is a grand retail area that lets you get in out of the weather and just spend a lazy afternoon shopping or window shopping.
For an even more relaxing time, there are plenty of pubs in the area. One can hoist a pint with friends and wile away the hours telling exaggerated stories that have been told over and over.
Or if you want a little excitement in your life, you can spend the day at North End Road. It Is not the most congenial location, but it is filled with different activities that get the heart going. The market, which is open from 8 to 6, is a must-see.
Then if you like antiques, you need to go to Lillie Road. There are about 10 to 20 antique shops that line the street and provide you with ample opportunities to find that special little treasure to bring home and enhance your own apartment’s look.
In the end, there is something for everyone in this little community, and it does make for an excellent place to reside when you want a touch of the country while living in the city.
