Richmond

Richmond Park, the Thames and a lively town centre in south-west London.

Richmond is a riverside town in south-west London, in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, about 8 miles from central London. With the Thames, Richmond Park and a lively town centre, it is one of the most popular places in London for families and for people who want green space within easy reach of the city.

Living in Richmond

Richmond Park, the largest of London's royal parks, has herds of free-roaming deer and wide open views. The view from Richmond Hill over the Thames is so famous that it is protected by an Act of Parliament. In the town centre, Richmond Green is surrounded by Georgian houses, and the riverside by Richmond Bridge has pubs, restaurants and boat hire. Richmond Theatre and a busy high street of shops are close by, and the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew are just to the north. Homes range from Georgian and Victorian houses to flats in period conversions and newer riverside apartments.

Getting around

Richmond station has the District line, the London Overground and South Western Railway trains to London Waterloo in about 20 minutes. North Sheen and Kew Gardens stations are nearby, and Heathrow is a short drive away. Chiswick is a few stops away on the District line or the Overground.

Cost of living in Richmond

Richmond is one of the more expensive parts of outer London, especially for family houses near the park, the river and Richmond Hill. Many buyers move here from central London for more space, good schools and the parks.

Richmond postcode: TW9 and TW10

Richmond is in two postcodes: TW9, covering the town centre, Richmond Green, North Sheen and Kew, and TW10, covering Richmond Hill, Petersham and Ham.

House prices in Richmond

Across the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, the average price paid for a home was about £814,000. Flats and maisonettes averaged about £493,000, and terraced houses about £932,000. Houses close to Richmond Park, the river and Richmond Hill usually sit above these borough-wide averages.
